An Introduction to Dai Nationality
With a population of 1,159,000, Dai live in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture and Dehong Dai-Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province. They are descendants of Baiyue in ancient time. The Dai language belongs to the Zhuang-Dai branch of the Zhuang-Dong group of the Chinese-Tibetan language family. Dai language is preserved and the literature is rich. A great many Buddhist Scriptures on Pattra have survived. The Dai engaged in agriculture and skilled in rice cultivation. They used to have glutinous food and chewing areca-nut. They prefer the taste of hot and sour. Their houses are bamboo buildings on stilts.
