An Introduction to Miao Nationality
With a population of 8,940,100, Miao live in the region or provinces of Guizhou, Hunan, Yunnan, Guangxi, Sichuan and Hainan. The Miao language belongs to the Miao branch of the Miao-Yao group of the Chinese-Tibetan language family. The dialectics of Miao language in different areas are diversified. They mostly live in mountainous areas and engage in agriculture with forestry as a sideline. They dwell in thatched huts or houses on stilts. Rice is basic food and the tastes of hot and sour are preferable.
They are experienced in playing bamboo wind pipe, singing and dancing. They also skilled in embroidery, cross-stitch work, wax printing, making silver ornaments and paper cut. The major festivals of Miao are Eighth of April in lunar month, Miao New Year. Miao people worship their ancestors and deity.
