  An Introduction to Yi Nationality
    With a population of 7,762,300, Yi live in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan, Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan, and also in the provinces of Guizhou and Guangxi. From 8th to 10th century, a local administration called Nanzhao existed in Yunnan province. With its old writing, the Yi language belongs to the Yi branch of the Tibetan-Burmese group of the Chinese-Tibetan language family. The Yi engage in highland agriculture and flatland cultivation, and sidelined with animal husbandry. They live in earth/wood structured houses with tile and tower. Cornmeal, rice are their basic food. The taste of hot and sour are preferable. Tuo-tuo meet and gan-gan wine are popular diet to local people. The Yi have a wealth of historical literature and cultural relics. The Torch Festival is most celebrated. Yi people worship of deity and ancestral.
