The Hezhen Village
 


  An Introduction to Hezhen Nationality
    With a population of 4,640, Hezhen live in the counties of Tongjiang, Fuyuan and Raohe along the Heilongjiang and Wusuli rivers. They were called “Heijin” or “Heizhen”(these name sounds similar but written in different Chinese Characters)in ancient time. Their language belongs to the Manchu branch of the Manchu-Tungus group of the Altaic language family. They used to live on fishing and hunting and started agriculture at the end of the Qing Dynasty. Dog sleighs were used as transportation tool. Their decorative designs, embroidery, carving and fish skin products are well known traditional handicrafts. The festivals of Hezhen New Year and Wurigong are most celebrated. Hezhen people believe in Shamanism.
