Dongxiang

With a population of about 514,000, Dongxiang mainly in the Dongxiang Autonomous County, Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture of Gansu Province. The Dongxiang language belongs to is a the Mongolian group of Altaic family. No writing system preserved.

The Dongxiang people engaged in agriculture and sidelined with animal husbandry. Potato planting in the area they live is famous for high yield, rich and sweet. Sheep growing plays an important part in the life of Dongxiang people.

The Dongxiang blieved in Islam. Main festivals of Dongxiang are Ashoura, Eid al-Fitr and Id al-Adha.

 

 The Dongxiang Museum building is exact replica of dwelling in Dongxiang Autonomous County in Gansu province. It waw built in July 2007 in accordance with the customs and cultural characteristics of the ethnic. The building covers an area of 200 square meters and the building area is 118 square meters. The layout of the building is courtyard style.

The Dongxiang Museum was built lie of the mountains and set east to west into the L-shaped. The main house is located at east and the the rooms of side wings are located at south. There is a wide corridor in front of the main house. The house was built with rubbly fundation, brick walls, stone column bases. The columns and beams are all fixed with mortises. Cornice, the end of the beams and wooden windows are carved with pattern which are simple and beautiful. The main house has three rooms and the living room is located in the middle. There tables and chairs in the main room whith is used to receive guests.The Kangs, the bed with heating system, were set on the north and south side of the room. The kang on north side is reserved for the couple whilst the kang on south side are reserved for elders and children. cabinet or low table are placed beside the east wall on the kang. People may sitting cross-legged on the kang, dining or doing their house work on the table. The water tank is located in front of wall on the corridor where is easy to take to wash with.

The rooms on both wings are used as food storage or home workshop. Kitchen is built in the the south end of the main house with light well for lighting and ventilation. There sheds located at north end of main building to feed livestock,  keep firewood or store utencils.

The exhbits in Dongxiang museum are live settings of a household. The farming tools, food cabinets, bins and daily groceries are collected from local.
